Lonnie James Slaughter

January 15, 1946 - September 30, 2024

Lonnie James Slaughter, 78, Of Floyd, passed away on Monday September 30, 2024. Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Waitman and Iva Slaughter; brothers, Lane Slaughter, Jerry Slaughter; sister, Betty Slaughter; mother and father in-law, Charlie and Ora Reed; brothers-in-law, Eugene Reed, Quinton Simpkins; and sisters-in-law, June Simpkins, Donna Hayden.

Lonnie was the owner of Slaughters Supermarket and Garden Center along with Slaughters Tree Farm. He was a loving father and proud grandfather. He was a sports enthusiast who encouraged all his children and grandchildren to either pick up a ball or go to work. If any one of them ever got a scrape or cut, he would tell them to “rub some dirt on it”. He taught all of them that life was tough, but they had to be tougher and always look a man straight in the eyes and give them a firm handshake.

Lonnie is survived by his wife, Joyce Reed Slaughter; son, Timmy (Tracey) Slaughter; daughters, Susan (Scott) Rardin, Jennifer (Frank) Boothe; grandchildren, Emily (Tyler) Wheeler, Natalie (Gus) Underwood, Chloe (Parker) King, ShaeLee Slaughter, Tyler Rardin, Taelon Slaughter, J.J. Rardin, Daecan Slaughter, Kendal Rardin, Waeman Slaughter, Jaeton Slaughter; great grandchildren, Brystan Wheeler, Everleigh Underwood, Kantry Wheeler, Barrett Underwood, Layah Wheeler, Lainey King, sister, Judy Young (Leon). Lonnie is also survived by numerous past and present employees and customers that became like family to him through the years whether it was at the Supermarket or on the farm. 

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 1PM at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin and Pastor Phil Madison officiating. Interment will follow in Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5pm-7pm Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Gardner Funeral Home.

Working for Lonnie and at Slaughters helped shape many young people in Floyd. His family is a part of so many in our home. God Bless Lonnie .

Prayers for the family for strength in the coming days and months. The Slaughter family has been strong and dedicated part of Floyd for many decades. Prayers for Lonnie to use his wings to fly up above the clouds to join his Mom and Dad and some of his siblings.....job will done on earth....Rest in Peace Lonnie.

Lonnie was a hard working person who added to his community and to the world. His life was a productive one and his family a joy. Peace to them in the knowledge that he was a good man.

So sorry to see this. I knew Lonnie in High School and I graduated with his brother Lane. My thoughts are with the family. My mom would not shop at any other grocery store.

I am sincerely sorry and pray God will give you strength and heal the hole in your heart. David worked both at the store and the tree farm. He always had the utmost respect for Lonnie and I feel he presented a good role model.

I'm saddened to learn of the passing of my long-time friend, Lonnie. I believe our friendship goes back to seventh grade at Floyd Elementary School (now The Fabric Center). Many prayers for his family and his many friends. FCHS, Class of '64

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my second cousin Lonnie. His mother, Iva, and my grandmother, Lurlene Cockram Rorrer, were sisters. One of my dearest memories is from 2009 when I visited Lonnie and Joyce at their home with my grandmother. It was a special time spent with family, listening to stories of days gone by. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Lonnie’s passing. He was both a mentor and a friend to me as I grew up working alongside him in the tree business. Lonnie was a man of true integrity, and he will be greatly missed.
