Howard E. Morgan

April 18, 1936 - February 08, 2025

Howard E. Morgan was born on April 18, 1936, in Greensboro, NC, to Henrietta and William J. Morgan. He peacefully passed away on February 8, 2025 in Abingdon, VA, leaving behind a lifetime of love, adventure, and cherished memories.

Howard’s journey began in Greensboro, but life soon took him to Wilmington, NC, where he graduated from New Hanover High School in 1955. It was there that he met his high school sweetheart, Betty, and they married in 1956. Together, they built a life in Greensboro, NC, where they welcomed their daughters, Susan and Lisa, before settling in Hollywood, FL. Determined and passionate, Howard pursued his love of aviation, earning a degree in Aeronautical Science & Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Howard’s career was as dynamic as he was. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USCGC Mendota before working in television production at WAVY (Wilmington) and WFMY (Greensboro). But his true calling was in the skies—he became a respected airline captain, first with National Airlines and later with Pan American World Airways.

Beyond his professional achievements, Howard had a deep love for people, faith, and adventure. While in Hollywood, FL, he was an active member of Sheridan Hills Baptist Church, where he played a key role in producing its televised services. He found joy in the great outdoors, whether camping, fishing, or enjoying a simple picnic. He also had a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly the performances at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA.

To his grandchildren—Joseph, Carly, and Michael—he was simply “Grandpa,” a title he wore with pride and love. He was also a beloved uncle, with special bonds formed with many of his nephews. He is survived by his loving wife, Jenny Morgan, who became his companion and soulmate after Betty’s passing. Together, they shared a love of travel, theater, and, most of all, each other. He also leaves behind his daughter, Lisa, of Winston-Salem, NC, his grandchildren, and many special nephews, especially Mark Morgan and Dan Keith, who offered him unwavering support as his health declined.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harry (Ted), William, and Robert Morgan. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Phyllis and Shirley Morgan.

Howard lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Funeral service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Gardner Funeral Home with pastor Jeff Dalton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
