In Loving Memory of Allen (Al) Willard Sanders
Allen “Al” Willard Sanders, originally from Hoffman, Minnesota, passed away November 5, 2025 surrounded by family. After meeting the love of his life, Janet Q. Sanders, in 1994, Al moved to Indian Valley, Virginia, where the two built a beautiful life together. They would have celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary in February 2026.
Al was a man of quiet strength and boundless kindness—a gentle giant with a smile that could brighten even the darkest day. Children seemed to find him wherever he went, drawn to his playful spirit and big heart. He loved his family deeply—his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and every other child who came his way.
Early in his career, Al worked for Loram Maintenance of Way in Minnesota, traveling across the country as a railroad trackman. After settling in Virginia, he was employed by several local contracting companies before joining Virginia Tech as a master electrician. He proudly retired in 2022 after 22 years of dedicated service.
Known for his humor and lighthearted outlook, Al wore his personality proudly. One of his favorite shirts read: “Fun-cle: noun. Similar to a dad, but only cooler and better looking. [See also: handsome, exceptional].” That line could not have described him better.
True to his generous nature, Al chose to continue giving even after his passing by being an organ donor—helping others in need and inspiring future healers through his final act of service.
Al leaves behind his beloved wife, Janet; children, Amie vonKattengel (Ed), Joshua Manning (Hona); grandchildren, Hunter Maxwell (Jena), Isaac Maxwell (Amy), Wyatt Maxwell (Jessi Rhodes), and Kozmo Federer; great grandchildren, Koda, Paisley, and Allie--his namesake– expected to arrive in 2026.
Al is also survived by his parents, Willard and Sandra Sanders; sisters, Cindy Trosen, Stephanie Gavin (Steve), Joanne Somera (Hugo) and brother, Mike Sanders; chosen family, Danny Quesenberry (Shelby), Donnie Quesenberry (Sarah), Toney Quesenberry (Bonnie), Kathy Wright (Steve), numerous nieces and nephews, and a large extended family who will forever carry his laughter, love, and wisdom in their hearts.
A celebration of Al’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Gardner’s Funeral Home Chapel, with pastors John Hopkins and Greg Cox officiating. Interment will follow at Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery, Willis, VA. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to the American Cancer Society be made in memory of Al.

I worked with Al for quite a few years at VT facilities. He was always there to help and never seemed to have a bad day. So sad that he has left all of us so early in his life. He will me greatly missed

Janet, both Joe and I met Allen at VA Tech. And he was so nice, funny sometimes, and so nice to everyone. I had a student one day ask me if ‘that guy really worked there, I asked why he was asking. He said he is so nice and just smoothly fixed things.’ We are just so sorry you had to let him go…

To me, Allen was one of the "cool" older cousins when I was growing up. If I had a nickel for every quarter he found behind my ear I'd be a wealthy man. He was also my family birthday buddy and we had some joint celebrations at Grandma's house over the years. We didn't see each other much after Allen moved to Virginia, but I always rooted for the Hokies in his honor. I grieve with the entire Sanders family at this sudden loss, and will always remember him fondly.

Al was one of the kindest men I've ever known. He came several times to watch High Noon (a band I have played with many years) and I got to know him well. He truly was thoughtful, friendly, and so easy to talk to. Though I hadn't seen him in recent years, I will never forget him. May God bless Janet and his family. Rest in peace my friend.

I Graduated with Allen in 1986 from Hoffman-Kensington High School. We went through K-12 together. A Childhood friend that grew up 1 1/2 miles from me and we hung out often and was a great guy. Sanders Family, I am so sorry for your loss.
