Virginia Mary Smith

March 25, 1920 - December 16, 2018

Virginia Mary (nee) Murphy Smith, born in Brooklyn, NY on March 25, 1920, was 98 years of age and passed peacefully in her sleep on December 16th. She was the 4th child born to her parents, Thomas and Ethel (Linder) Murphy, and the last surviving sibling of eight children. Ginny was a Goldstar Wife after losing her husband, Pvt. Edward C. Smith, 73 years ago during WWII. They had one child, a daughter, Agnes Smith Olmo who predeceased her in 2010. She was a retiree of the Railroad System yet she never obtained a Driver's license during her lifetime. It was a family joke because her passion was shopping for anything that was on-sale whether food, clothing or housewares, she'd get one of us to drive her wherever she needed to go. She enjoyed reading the daily newspaper with her morning cup of coffee and did ceramics for years before her eyesight started worsening as her years went by. Left to cherish her memory are her four grandchildren, Ginger (husband) Tony Garbarino, Kathy (husband) Terry Williams, Richie Olmo, Jr. (wife) Debbie Eanes Olmo, and Denise Olmo. Her great grandchildren, Anthony Garbarino, Danielle, who shared her birthday with her great grandmother, (and husband) Zach McCormack, Joseph Garbarino, Larry (wife) Heather Williams, Kara Williams, and Richie Williams. Sadie and Jazmine Webster. Along with her great-great grandchildren and the light in her eyes, Maci Morrissey, 6, Emberly Williams, 2, and Sawyer McCormack, 4 months old. Two nieces, Patricia DeVito & Roseann Doria along with many grand nieces & nephews. Longtime friends from Floyd, June Brent, Vera Lee & Emmie Conner. The family sends their thanks to Dr. Gary Kuiken and his staff for their gentle treatment of her when she was in his patient. Special thanks to the staff at South Roanoke Nursing Home for the wonderful care they gave to our grandmother these past 4 months. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Floyd County Rescue Squad Station 3. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday December 19,2018 at 3pm at Gardner Funeral home. There will be a visitation one hour prior to service time.
