Kenneth Hale King

January 21, 1942 - December 18, 2023

Kenneth Hale King of Check Va. born January 21,1942, passed peacefully in the presence of his loving family on December 18, 2023, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a valiant 10 year battle with cancer. Kenneth was the loving husband of Carolyn Conner King, and the proud father of Victoria, Kenneth and Joseph. He was raised on his 6th generation farm on Kings Store Road, maintaining the farm throughout his life. His professional career was spent in the concrete construction industry where he made his mark working on major highway and industrial projects throughout southwest Virginia. In 1974, Kenneth started his own company which expanded in 1981 to become King Concrete Company Inc. which included building a ready-mix concrete plant operation in Floyd County. His decades long service to the local area led to him being affectionately known as “The Concrete Man''. Kenneth retired in 2007 following the sale of the ready-mix plant operation to his long-time colleague and friend James Bryant, owner of Stuart Concrete in Stuart Va. Kenneth helped numerous churches and community organizations with construction and expansion projects through the years and was a founding member of the Locust Grove Fire Department. In retirement, he further embraced time on the farm, ensuring its vitality for the generations to come. His greatest dedication was to family, working and playing on the farm by day, and playing Rook at the kitchen table with his children and grandchildren way into the night.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lewis Brammer and Garnet Hale King. He is survived by his spouse: Carolyn Conner King; Children: Victoria King Davis (Joseph), Kenneth Hale King, Jr. (Kelly), Joseph Daniel King (Heather); eight grandchildren: Nicholas King Davis, Brittany Bennette, Caroline King Bushkar (Ryan), Kenneth Hale King, III, William Edward Monaghan King, Luke Mitchell Conner King, Trevor Lewis King, Caitlin King Howery (Adrian); five great grandchildren: Levi M. Bushkar, Aiden B. Howery, J. Wyatt King, Madeline G. Howery, Stetson K. Howery; sister: Nancy King Page (Vernon).

Funeral services will be Friday December 22, at 1:00 PM at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Graham Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Restvale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 PM Thursday December 21 at Gardner Funeral Home. A reception with friends and family will follow the burial (~4:00 - 6:00 p.m.) at Floyd Community Room beside Skyline National Bank in Floyd VA

Flowers are appreciated or please consider donating to Floyd Station #3 Fire Department or Floyd Co. Rescue Squad.

The King family are all in my prayers. Watching you guys as a family coming to Havens Chapel in Locust Grove was wonderful. The happy family with those beautiful smiles. Kenny was not there every Sunday because he had the farm and his business that never gave him many days off. Kenny was such a kind man it was rare for him to say no if someone needed his help. I saw a picture recently of the family and everyone still had those smiles. I pray that those smiles come back soon with the many motors you shared. Prayers for your loss.

Our heartfelt sympathy to Kenny's family and friends. Kenny, Joe and their tireless crew worked to form and pour concrete for our house in 2013 and 2015 for another project. Kenny was a man of integrity, kindness and great business leader who adored his family. We are so grateful for having met and formed a business friendship with he and Joe. It was during 2013 on our job that Kenny discovered his illness and was blessed to have started treatment. We will keep everyone in our thoughts and prayers and ask that God will comfort the family in their time of grief.

Our most deepest heartfelt sympathy is extended to Kenny’s family. I (Lloyd) knew Kenny from the early 90’s. I would always buy my concrete from him for my jobs but then if I wasn’t busy with my projects he always had things he wanted me to do for him. He always treated me right. He was a good man. May God be your comfort, strength, and peace during this sad time in your lives.
