Norman Lee "Buck" Hoback

November 20, 1934 - January 11, 2024

Norman Lee “Buck” Hoback, 89, of Hollins, Virginia made his last long-haul run and entered Heaven’s gates to be with his Lord and Savior while surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at his home. We rejoice in his Heavenly reunion with many loved ones who have gone before. Norman is the son of the late Clifford Victor Hoback and Virginia Hodges Hoback of Floyd, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his two sisters and brothers-in-law, George and Wanda Bowles of Roanoke, Virginia and Shirley and Maxine Peters of Check, Virginia, as well as several well-loved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Lena Faye Nichols Hoback, who was his childhood and high school sweetheart at Check High School, and his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jeff Marian and grand-daughter Malena Brooke Marian, who was her “Poppy’s” joy and light of his life, all of Daleville, Virginia, as well as neighbors, Hilary Frazier Dietels and Leslie Frazier, whom he loved as his own grand-daughters.  Buck was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church and then Botetourt Community Church to worship with his family. Buck was retired from Lawrence Transportation Companies after 60 years of dedicated and safe service as a tractor trailer driver all across the United States and Canada. “Pops” absolutely loved being under the wheel of his favorite International trucks and would be found driving nothing but Fords and John Deere’s otherwise. Being raised on a dairy farm in Floyd, he was a farmer at heart and enjoyed raising beef cattle there. Most of all, he enjoyed every minute he spent with his family, he enjoyed telling stories about adventurous trucking experiences and the old days and the old ways on the road and on the farm. Thanks to him and several generations of Hobacks before him, the farm remains a treasure to his family for generations to come. The family wishes to thank the Hollins Rescue Squad and Fire Department for their quick response time and perseverance to save him from his unexpected passing and Officer Beckner of Roanoke County Police Department for his compassion and care, along with neighbors near and far who answered an early morning call for help. Much love and appreciation to all of the family, friends, and neighbors for their support and love shown during this difficult time.  The family greatly appreciates Gardner Funeral Home, their direction, patience, respectfulness, and consideration. A funeral service will be held on Monday January 15, 2024 at 2pm at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Bailey officiating. Interment will follow at Stonewall Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.

Always greeted you with a handshake and a smile. Buck (popcorn) one of the best furniture movers I ever meet. But his commitment to his family is what I admired the most. For the loved ones left behind, May God's Love, and Peace, carry you through this difficult time.

I have always cherished the time visiting with Buck and Lena on the mountain. Buck was my father's (Clifton Layne Wilson) role model and best friend for many years and I will always remember the many stories of them two on the road. RIP
