Larry Gene Chaffin

October 10, 1951 - April 20, 2025

Larry Gene Chaffin, 73, of Floyd, Virginia, took his last breath on this earth and with his next breath entered into heaven’s glory on Resurrection morning, April 20, 2025.

Larry was born on October 10, 1951, in Dickenson County, Virginia, to Frankie “Gay” Chaffin and James Chaffin. He grew up surrounded by love and laughter as one of ten siblings. During his high school years, Larry ran track, played football, and proudly became one of the first in his family to graduate.

In 1971, Larry married the love of his life, Vickie, and together they raised two daughters, Miranda and Carrie. Larry and Vickie were later blessed with six grandchildren who cherished their “Grandad” deeply. Just this past year, Larry was overjoyed to become a great-grandfather, forming a very special bond with his great-granddaughter.

Larry was a devoted family man and a tireless worker, retiring after 30 years of service as a superintendent with VDOT. In retirement, he embraced the simple joys of life—working on his farm, tending to his meat shop, remodeling a home, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his beloved family. A true jack-of-all-trades, there wasn’t much Larry couldn’t do.

Larry was known for his kind, humble, and generous spirit. He never hesitated to help someone in need, never expected anything in return, and offered wisdom and guidance to anyone who sought it. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, and friend anyone could ask for.

Above all, Larry loved the Lord. He gave his life to Christ on Easter Sunday at the age of 24 and has been a faithful servant.  His life was a shining example of God’s love and grace, and he radiated that light to everyone he met—whether a family member or a stranger.

Larry leaves behind a lasting legacy. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. The lessons he taught and the love he gave will continue to live on through those he held dear.

He is preceded in death by his father, James Chaffin, and four siblings: Timmy, Gary, Henry, and Robert Chaffin.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Vickie Chaffin; his daughters, Miranda Keith (Stacy) and Carrie Chaffin; his mother, Frankie “Gay” Chaffin; his grandchildren, Haylee Chaffin Altizer (Kyle), Carter Keith, Kenzee Chaffin, Jaycee Chaffin, John Keith, and Isaiah Keith; and his great-granddaughter, Avalynn Altizer. He is also survived by his siblings: Becky Culbertson, James Chaffin, Stanley Chaffin, Susie Powers, and Jeanette Addington; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 1:00PM at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Reed officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Gardner’s Funeral Home Prior to the service.

Mr. Chaffin will be missed by the Gill Crew. His smile and wave on his green lawn mower, blue tractor, taking care of the cattle and Cherry Hill property is what we will remember and miss most! Our hearts are heavy and we offer prayers and our condolences for the loss of Mr. Chaffin, a kindhearted and warm neighbor, friend, grandfather, father, and husband.

I am so sorry to hear this news. My sincere condolences to Vickie and all your family. I met Larry 25 years ago after purchasing a piece of land next to his. He has always been the most gracious gentleman in all our affairs. He was even so kind as to keep an eye on my gate if there was an issue. The world will miss him so much. It was a great pleasure to have known him, only wish he hadn't gone so soon. Safe travels Larry!
