Burlin T Lell

March 27, 1934 - May 05, 2025

It is with heavy hearts and much love that the family announces the passing of Burlin T. Lell of Pilot, Virginia, on Monday, May 5, 2025, at the age of 91. Burlin was born in 1934 in Kentucky, the son of Gilmer Lell and Virginia (Hurley) Lell. At the age of 18, he married the love of his life, Geneva Phillips, and they enjoyed a beautiful life together for over 70 years (Geneva passed on August 10, 2022). He also enjoyed several hobbies such as fishing, hunting, collecting coins, singing, and playing music. He was a talented musician and had a beautiful singing voice. Burlin’s favorite instruments were the guitar and the mandolin and he frequently entertained family and guests with country melodies and religious songs.

Burlin served his country while in the Army in direct combat driving tanks in the 3rd Armored Division in Korea during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and was always proud to be an American Army Veteran.

Burlin worked as an automobile mechanic during the majority of his employed working years. He also worked on the railroad for several years shortly after being married, and, even earlier in his life, he worked for a short time as a coal miner.

Burlin is survived by his son, Rev. Barry M. Lell (Debbie), and his daughter, Elaina L. Holmes (Gregory), 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. His daughter, Sherry L. Tannenbaum, passed away in 2024. He is also survived by his sister, Mossie Hornfeck, who resides in Maryland, Betty Hurley, who resides in Kentucky, and Carol Arthur, who resides in Kentucky.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Wilson Cemetery with Reverend Barry M. Lell officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, May 9, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gardner’s Funeral Home.

I feel truly grateful to have spent so much time with Burl (Paw). His stories were full of wisdom and warmth, and I’ll always remember the joy in his voice when he played his guitar. He had a special way of bringing comfort and light to those around him — whether through a tune, a tale, or a perfectly made batch of cornbread. His presence was a gift, and he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
