John Donald Dunn

John Donald Dunn of Floyd, Virginia passed away peacefully on May 17th, 2025, at the age of 95. He was born on March 8, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY to John Joseph Dunn and Marcella Clarke Dunn. John joined the United States Air Force at the age of 18, spending several years in active service and in the reserves. While stationed at Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY, he met Lorraine Craft. They wed in 1952 and were married for 72 years, John went to college on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees. He taught social studies at South Junior High in Newburgh, NY, eventually becoming social studies department head for the Newburgh school district. The Dunns raised their family in New Paltz, NY before retiring to Brevard, NC.

John is survived by his wife, Lorraine Craft Dunn; daughter Karin Dunn Grosshans and son-in-law Kurt Grosshans; son Michael J Dunn; and grandchildren Kristen Grosshans and Casey Grosshans.

John overcame a challenging childhood to become a respected educator and leader. Providing for his family was always his priority. He was an example of integrity, hard work, and kindness for his children and grandchildren. He loved to tell a good joke and had a soft spot for animals of any kind. He will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Good Samaritan Hospice for their care. There will be no service at this time.
