Josephine Hollandsworth Alderman
March 26, 1939 - July 11, 2025
Josephine Hollandsworth Alderman, age 86, of Floyd, Va. went to her heavenly home July 11th, 2025. She grew up in Indian Valley along with her 11 siblings and had all the blessings of a loving family and self-sufficient, country childhood. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lonzie C. Alderman. They spent many years raising their four daughters, Sharon Reedy (Gary), Karen Hawkins (Stan), Rhonda Dixon (Glenn) and Becky Thompson.
Josephine sewed all of her daughters’ childhood clothing, was active in their school events, always had garden fruits and veggies canned, and was epic at making pies, cakes, biscuits, sausage gravy, homemade butter and cottage cheese. She loved to read and regularly read stories to her girls.
Later on, she became the sales lady at the Village Fashion Shop in Floyd, and then went on to get her real estate license and worked for Blue Ridge Land and Auction Co. She enjoyed singing and playing snare drum with Lonzie and other family and friends in a bluegrass band called The Buffalo Mountain Boys. Later she traveled with Lonzie for over 40 years singing in The Good Intentions gospel group. More than anything she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Grandchildren: Josh Reedy (Rachel), Carmen Reedy, Amy Huff (Bobby), Adam Hawkins (Heidi), Jacob Hawkins (Molly), Brittany Claypool (Josiah), Woody Dixon (Ashley), Hannah Deaton (Chris), Joseph Dixon (Jordan), Ben Thompson (Lizena), Emily Caldwell (Jason).
Josephine adored her 23 great grandchildren and number 24 is on the way.
Josephine is survived by 3 sisters: Vada Cox, Wanda Grubb (Duayne), Martha Bower (Jimmie), 1 brother: Ren Hollandsworth, 1 sister-in-law: Evah Sutphin, 1 brother-in-law: Russell Howell.
The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the Floyd County Rescue Squad and to the outstanding caregivers who provided amazing love and care over the past years.
Josephine’s Funeral Service will be at Gardner Funeral Home at 2:00 pm Monday July 14, 2025, with Pastor Greg Howell and Rev. Stanley Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in Willis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30am until service time on Monday. Along with floral arrangements, the family would appreciate donations made in her memory to Horses Healing Hearts (1108 Cox Store Rd SW, Floyd, Va.) or to the Floyd County Rescue Squad.

Vance and I always looked forward to spending time with Josephine and Lonzie and the family. Going to gospel singing concerts with the group was a highlight. Josephine was a kind, compassionate and creative woman. I appreciated her wisdom and insights and her and Lonzie's commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ were an inspiration to us. My health doesn't allow me to go far but I'll be praying for y'all. May God's peace rest on each of her family.
