Merlin E. Thompson
August 25, 1926 - January 01, 2026
Merlin E. Thompson passed peacefully at home on January 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He has now entered Heaven and rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior.
Born on August 25, 1926, Merlin was the son of Jeff and Virgie Thompson, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Sherman Thompson, Arlie Thompson, Angie Cox, Una Thompson, Bain Thompson, Eleanor Kilduff, and Harold Thompson. He is survived by his brother, Breman Thompson.
Merlin is survived by his devoted wife, Livie Thompson, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. A life built on love, faith, hard work, and deep commitment. Together, they raised a family he was incredibly proud of. He was a loving father to Janice Shortt (Michael), Joyce Midkiff (Ronnie), and Sherrell Thompson (Sheila).
His family was the center of his world. He leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Ashlee Weeks (John), Ryan Shortt (Hope), and Christopher Thompson (Jessica), and beloved great-grandchildren: Peyton and Grayson Weeks; Braylee and Austin Shortt; and Case, Craig, and Johannah Thompson.
Merlin honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1949 to 1951. A farmer at heart, he began working the land as soon as he was big enough to help, learning early the value of hard work and responsibility. Farming was not just what he did; it was who he was. He continued raking hay and helping his grandchildren on the family farm up until his 99th birthday, a true reflection of his strength, humility, and love for both his land and his family.
Known for his warm smile, quick wit, and well-told stories, Merlin had a way of making people feel at home. His jokes, steady presence, and quiet wisdom will be deeply missed. His life, spanning nearly a century, left a lasting impact that will continue through generations..
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Carla Peters, Kim Lovern, and Amy Jo Huff for the compassionate care and devotion they provided to Merlin, and to Good Samaritan Hospice for their support and guidance. The family is also deeply thankful for the many friends and neighbors whose friendship, kindness, and support were a constant source of comfort throughout Merlin’s life and during this journey.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday January 6, 2026 at 3PM at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow at Restvale Cemetery in Copper Hill, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Medical Charities of Floyd County, supported through the Floyd Tractor Run, an organization close to the family’s heart.

We're so sorry for the loss of Uncle Merlin. He was a constant challenge to make smile, but I knew it was always lying just below the smirk. 😉 Peace to you all as you learn how to navigate without his presence here.
