Lois Ann Yeatts Board

June 21, 1938 - May 05, 2026

Lois Ann Yeatts Board of Check, Virginia, entered into eternal rest on May 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and dedication to her family and community.

Born on June 21, 1938, in Check, Virginia, Lois was the daughter of the late Tommy Yeatts and Helen Yeatts. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Albert “Buck” Yeatts, Thomas Wayne Yeatts, and Roger Yeatts, as well as her sisters-in-law, Suzanne Yeatts and Bonnie Yeatts. She is survived by her brother R. Lowell Yeatts and his wife Dorma Yeatts.

Lois was a devoted wife to Daniel L. Board, Sr., and a loving mother to Daniel L. Board, Jr. (Kristie Board) of Arlington, Virginia. She was a proud and cherished grandmother to Kaitrin Board and Kaylee Board who brought her immense joy. She is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.

A lifelong learner, Lois attended Radford College, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree in Education. She dedicated 32 years to the education profession, serving as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator across Salem City, Roanoke County, and Floyd County school systems. Although her work focused on the development of both elementary and secondary students, Lois was especially known as a mentor and inspiration to new educators. Her impact across generations of teachers was immeasurable.

Faith was central to Lois’s life. She was a lifelong member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, where she remained deeply rooted in her Christian beliefs and community.

Lois found joy in the simple and beautiful things in life. She had a deep love for gardening, especially roses, and later in life enjoyed bird watching. She appreciated art, particularly collecting works by P. Buckley Moss, and was actively involved in fundraising for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was also an avid sports fan who enjoyed football and cheering for Jeff Gordon in NASCAR. Unbeknownst to many, Lois loved evaluating real estate and providing counsel to Danny, Sr. As a testament to her heart, she always related that these decisions would impact her cherished granddaughters for years to come.

She will be especially remembered for her witty spirit, warm personality, and ability to bring a smile to those around her, even in difficult times. “The Hallmark Channel” brought her great peace and evoked many smiles, as she always raved that “.... every story always ended on a good note.” Lois was also deeply appreciated and loved by her many caregivers, whose compassion and dedication brought comfort to her and her family.

Above all, Lois will be remembered for her kind heart, dedication to others, and unwavering commitment to education and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the National MS Society in her honor.

A combined viewing and funeral service will be held at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren on Saturday, May 9th, with visitation at 12:00 pm and services at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Wilson’s Cemetery.

I am very sorry to hear about “Mrs. Board”. Best teacher EVER. Some of my most enjoyable years was having her for 5th and 6th grades. I always felt that I was double blessed because she and I went to church together. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. She is healed now, and you will see her again one day. “What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see. And I look upon His face-The One who saved my by His grace. When He takes me by the hand and leads me through the Promised Land; What a day, glorious day that will be!”

It's probably been twenty-five or so year since the day I told Lois Board that she was one of the reasons I became an English teacher and a sponsor for high school students as they created their own yearbooks, newspapers, and literary magazines. Her immediate (and sardonic) reply was, "I am so sorry I did that to you." Lois was the queen of the appropriate one-liner for every occasion. When I was five she rode to Radford College with my mom and me for the summer session. My kindergarten class ended at the same time her last class of the day ended, but because my mom still had one more class, she would come get me to walk around the campus or go into the library with her. To me, a "library" had been that small room on the top floor of the courthouse where the school system placed books for children to check out during the summer. I was awed by her ability to move through the three floors of books, knowing exactly how to find the ones she needed. Ten years later she was the sponsor of the yearbook staff that I was part of. It was not a class for credit, but that did not keep her from demanding the very best each of us (and all of us together) could do. If an assigned task was not done well, that task was done again. It was all right to struggle with an assignment, ask for help, or just start over. It was not all right to give less than total attention to the assignment. A product which lacked quality was not a finished product. An assignment that was not finished by the deadline time the publisher had set meant that the whole book suffered, and if the book suffered, the young people it should feature would be without significant memories of their high school years. She was working with teenage non-professionals, a not always determined and devoted group. She managed to make us feel that we were part of the book publishing business during one class period a day. Even after she left for another school system and other sponsors worked with us on our publications, the lessons she had taught us about being very responsible about a product that students had to pay for guided us through the rest of high school. Some of those lessons just kept guiding us right through life. Years later when she and I were working to set up the first library our church had, she was just as relentless as she studied every book to determine its quality and the significant contribution it would make. As she moved out of the classroom into educational leadership roles, her determination, her talent, her personality became legendary. What talent she possessed to quickly assess a situation, decide what needed to be done, and then do it....immediately! How fortunate I was just to have spent time with her.

Danny and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Lois was a special lady . It was a while ago when I enjoyed the time with her watching birds, being involved in your family, and even watching Judge Judy with her. It is amazing how she could make you laugh. I appreciate my time with you and pray for you and your family. Lisa DeHart.
