Algie Edward Martin
July 23, 1933 - May 27, 2026
Algie Edward Martin, of Floyd, Virginia, passed away on May 26, 2026. Born on July 23, 1933, in Roanoke, he lived a full and faithful life marked by devotion to his family, hard work, and a love for country living and wood-crafting.
He graduated from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. He remained a Hokie fan all his days. Algie shared 66 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Sue. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960 (1st Lieutenant; Rifle and Pistol Team shooting champion). After his military service, he built a career with Nationwide Insurance, serving as a claims adjuster and agent from 1961 until his retirement in 1999. He was diligent in his business, but he couldn’t wait to get home to his garden! He found much joy in woodworking, beekeeping, vegetable gardening, target shooting, hunting, camping, history (especially Civil War and WWII), genealogy, running in the Senior Olympics until he was 75, and his Bible. Whether working with his hands, tending the garden, or enjoying time outdoors, Algie brought patience, skill, and endless determination to all he did.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; his grateful sons, Dan (Lauren) Martin and Tim (Nancy) Martin, and daughter, Julie (Tanner) Owen; grandchildren, Rachel (Nic) Waters, Erica Martin, and Hannah Martin, Danielle (Aaron) Kees, Kathryn Martin, Noah (Jennifer) Martin, Levi Martin, Jesse (Moriah) Owen, Wyatt Owen; great-grandchildren, Judah, Micah, and David Kees, Silas Owen, and Adelia Martin; sisters-in-law Joyce Martin and Jo Flora; nieces, Sharon Fitzgerald and Leslie (Bob) Schmidt; nephews, Kevin (Liz) Martin, Rodney (Cheli) Martin, and David (Joy) Flora; and many other much loved extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Elva Martin; his brother, Donald Martin; and his sister, Geneva (Jack) Fitzgerald. The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers who supported Dad, and Mom as well, throughout his long battle with ALS, with special thanks to those who cared for him in his final days: Beverly Easterling, Paul Duffy, Michelle Thomas, Angie Turman, and Heather Johnson. We are also deeply grateful for the excellent care provided by the Veterans Administration and Good Samaritan Hospice.
A graveside service will be held on May 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Huffville Cemetery, Pilot, with Reverend Thomas Mann officiating. Gardner Funeral Home is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS Association (als.org) or a Gift in Memory of Algie to Good Samaritan Hospice (goodsam.care).

Our hearts are heavy with the news of Uncle Algie’s passing, but also full of wonderful memories of time spent with him at his home in Floyd. We’ll always treasure the hunting, camping, shooting, stories, and laughter we shared together. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all of us.
