Samuel Jacob "Jake" Poff

November 26, 1934 - May 30, 2026

Samuel Jacob Poff, known to everyone as “Jake”, passed away on May 30, 2026 in Check, VA, at the age of 91. Born in 1934, Jake owned and operated a lumber business in Floyd County, VA, for over 40 years. Jake was an avid baseball and basketball player in his youth. Later on, he took pride coaching children in baseball and basketball at Check Elementary School. After retirement, Jake enjoyed mowing his big yard with his John Deere lawn tractor, making sure to mow down every single dandelion. He helped Barbara with all her quilting projects. He also liked fishing, but he especially liked making baskets full of Scandinavian Christmas Stars to give out to anyone and everyone. He loved watching NASCAR races, fancied bluegrass music and always thought that the Dachshund dog was the best dog breed that God ever created. Jake is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara Poff, son Michael Poff (Carol), stepsons Stacy Graham (Brenda) and Tracy Graham, 4 Grandchildren (and spouses), and 9 Great Grandchildren. Jake will be missed by his Smith's Store buddies, his really close friends – Bill & Corinne Graefe, Anitra Kesler, Bobby & Lisa Martin, Dean and Parker. He will also be missed by his new friends, his entire Hospice crew who were so helpful and kind throughout Jake's last days. There will be a graveside service at Restvale Cemetery in Copper Hill, VA. on Tuesday, June 2, at 1:00

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Floyd County Fire Station 3 (P.O. Box 33, Floyd, VA 24091), as a gift in Memory of Jake Poff.

Barbara, I was so sad to hear about Jake's passing. I know what a special bond that you two shared. The few times that Luther and I visited y'all it was so nice to be able to enjoy the company. And the little dog that y'all had was so sweet. I was petting it and talking to it and you said "I wish Jake could hear this". Him and Luther were outside. You are in my prayers. And I am so sorry. Brenda
