Patrick Warren Fenn

August 18, 1949 - February 21, 2013

Patrick Warren Fenn of Floyd, Virginia passed on February 21, 2013 at the age of 63. Patrick was born to Tyler John Fenn and Eldrid Louise Fenn (Bakken) on August 18, 1949 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Oregon. He attended the University of Oregon and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his longtime girlfriend Toni Lamberti of Floyd, with whom he had lived for seven years, his son Joshua Fenn, who lives in Floyd with his wife Lorrie, and his daughter Ananda Underwood, who lives in Floyd with her husband Brian and their two sons Dylan & Nicholas. Patrick's brothers, Tyler John Fenn and Richard Warren Fenn, have passed. His sister, Teresa Fenn Kohnke, lives with her husband Wash in Ridgefield, Washington. He is survived by two nephews; Matthew Savage of Portland, Oregon and David Fenn who lives in Washington State. He had two nieces; Kristin Schaff who lives in Portland like her brother Matthew, and Ashley Fenn who lives in Mississippi. He is survived by many cousins including James Patrick Zielsdorf of Beach, North Dakota. Patrick, who was known as Pat to his friends and family, had a great love for animals. He had eight donkeys and a miniature pony living on his property on Dobbins Farm Rd and two dogs that he cared for with Toni at their home together on Foggy Bottom Rd. In the last decade he had cared for many other animals including cats, fish, birds, geese, chickens, ducks, and his dogs (Tyson and Lyla.) In the '70s he worked with the U.S. Forest Service as a surveyor in Oregon. He moved to Floyd in the early '80s where he and his family lived as a part of the Travianna community in Check before moving to other parts of Floyd County. Pat was admired for his generous gentle loving spirit, his sense of humor, and his intelligence. He was well versed on many topics including farming, science, philosophy, music, and politics. He had great skill as an architect and a builder. He helped to build many homes in Floyd including a home he built for for his friend Ruth Bason for free. He helped to build the Blue Mountain School building in the 1980s. He worked with a group of entrepreneurs to build the FAEC ethanol plant in Floyd known as "The Still," where he worked from 1982 through 1988. He also made beautifully handcrafted flutes, chairs, benches, and tables. Pat was known for his beautiful singing voice and fine musicianship. Among the many different instruments he played are guitar, cello, flute, and harp. He played with a band called Mountain Frog with his bandmates/friends Chico Estrada, Ray Crawford, and Carrie Crawford. He played music regularly with musicians/friends such as Chris Youngblood and Starroot. Last year he recorded songs with Jim Hancock at the recording studio he built for his son Josh in Floyd. There will be a celebration of his life featuring a potluck and music at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 21st at Toni's home. The address is 252 Foggy Bottom Rd., Floyd, VA 24091. I knew Patrick (we always called him Patrick) my whole life. His mom, Addie, was my mom's (Elaine)little sister. They were so very close. We lived a couple of hours away but it seemed like we were together for all the holidays until we got out of high school. As Patrick went to the Navy,and his mother passed,and I moved to Idaho, we lost touch. Many years later he unexpectedly showed up at the nursing home where my mother was living.It was her favorite story to tell-- how she saw this bearded man walk in and said, "I would know those beautiful brown eyes anywhere". He was always her favorite. I thought I had more time to share with Patrick-- connecting on Facebook was wonderful.
