Lorice Smith O'Connor

June 27, 1928 - July 25, 2016

.O’Connor, Lorice Smith (88), of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 25, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, John O’Connor, Sr. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Laurel O’Connor and Bill Key, Louisville, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law, John O’Connor, Jr. and Karen, Newnan, GA, and Andrew and Judith O’Connor, Floyd, VA; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Kitty Smith, Beckley, WV. She was also preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Alvie and Doris Smith, Burlington, NC, and a sister, Nadine Turner, Floyd, VA. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, special neighbors and long-time friends from the Floyd County school system where she was employed for 38 years. She was active in the Retired Teachers Association. Lorice had a heart of gold, especially for those in need and for all of God’s creatures, great and small. Arrangements will be by Gardner’s Funeral Home in Floyd where family will receive friends on Friday, July 29, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. followed by a graveside service at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd at 11:15 a.m. Family will receive friends at the home at all other times. Andrew, Laurel and Johnny, I am so sorry for the passing of your Mom. She was a very special friend to me in Floyd. I always appreciated her honesty and the way she always told you exactly what she was thinking. I liked her from the first time I met her. There is no one I can think of that can fill her shoes. A lot of people will surely miss her. We will be praying for you and your family.

I was so saddened when I saw that Mrs. O'Connor had passed away. She was always so sweet and kind to me when I was hired as a secretary at Indian Valley Elementary. I truly enjoyed seeing her and talking about "old times" whenever we crossed paths. I will never forget her words of wisdom when I was first employed with the school system. I think of all the time she spent volunteering at Floyd Elementary after she retired as a school secretary. How many people would have "GIVEN" that much time after they retired!! She loved the children and always wanted the best for them. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers. When you lose your mother, you have lost your best friend. I am very sorry to hear of Ms. O'Conner's passing. She was a wonderful lady who I cherished knowing. My thoughts and prayers to the entire family.

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of this dear friend. We are grieving with you and trying hard to remember the many good times over 40 years of friendship. Lorice did so much to welcome us to FCHS and the community. We will miss her so much and remember her always.

I offer prayers of condolence to Mrs. O'Conner's family. I remember Mrs. O'Conner so well from Floyd HS and then from Floyd County HS. She was a true ambassador to the school, always friendly and helpful to students and visitors. (FCHS Class of '64)

So sad to hear about the loss of your fun loving mother. We were late in reading her obituary or we would have been present at the funeral and grave site.
